CHICAGO, IL — July 17, 2026 — The Health Foundation of Cook County (HFCC) today announced the appointment of Dr. Knitasha V. Washington, DHA, FACHE, as Interim Executive Director. Dr. Washington will lead the Foundation during its transition period, leading implementation of the Foundation’s updated strategic direction while partnering with the Board of Directors to prepare the organization for its next chapter of growth and impact.

Her appointment comes as the Foundation advances a multi-year transformation to strengthen its philanthropic impact, modernize its operating model, deepen community and donor partnerships, and further support Cook County Health’s mission of improving the health and well-being of Cook County residents.

“The Health Foundation of Cook County is entering an important new chapter,” said Verlon Johnson, Chair of the Health Foundation of Cook County Board of Directors.” As we implement our strategic vision and strengthen our role in supporting Cook County Health, Dr. Washington brings the leadership, strategic perspective, and collaborative approach needed to guide the Foundation through this important transition. The Board is confident she will help build momentum, strengthen partnerships, and position the Foundation for lasting impact.”

Dr. Washington’s relationship with Cook County Health began more than three decades ago as an Administrative Resident at Provident Hospital. That early experience launched a career dedicated to strengthening public healthcare systems through evidence-based policy, organizational transformation, quality improvement, and community-centered innovation.

For more than three decades, Dr. Washington has built a distinguished career leading healthcare transformation across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. As Founder and President of ATW Health Solutions, she leads a nationally respected consulting firm that partners with federal and state agencies, health systems, foundations, and community organizations to advance healthcare quality, patient safety, workforce development, organizational transformation, and strategic partnerships. Dr. Washington will continue in her role as Founder and President of ATW Health Solutions while serving as Interim Executive Director of the Foundation.

A nationally recognized leader in healthcare quality, behavioral health, and health equity, Dr. Washington has helped organizations translate policy, evidence, and community engagement into measurable improvements in care delivery and organizational performance. Her leadership experience includes national advisory and governance roles with organizations such as the National Quality Forum, American Academy of Family Physicians, National Association of Health Services Executives, and the American College of Healthcare Executives, as well as mentoring emerging business leaders through the Goldman Sachs Black in Business program.

Reflecting on her appointment, Dr. Washington said:

“Cook County Health has shaped both my professional journey and my commitment to public service. It is an honor to serve the Foundation during this important transition and help strengthen its capacity to mobilize philanthropy in support of one of our nation’s most essential public health systems. Together, we have an opportunity to build stronger partnerships, expand community impact, and create a lasting foundation for future generations. I believe lasting change happens when people, policy, and purpose are aligned, and I look forward to working alongside the Foundation, Cook County Health, and our community partners to advance that vision.”

During her interim appointment, Dr. Washington will work closely with the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Cook County Health leadership to advance strategic priorities, strengthen philanthropic partnerships, enhance organizational capabilities, and ensure continuity while the Board conducts a search for the Foundation’s permanent Executive Director.
